Blue Destiny – a small blues-based music label with huge ambitions – has dropped its (potentially) landmark case against Google. Allegedly the reason Blue Destiny had to back off was because of the huge amounts of cash it discovered it needed to fight Google’s army of lawyers.

This decision is a fairly important one for Google, since it was hoping to get some kind of permanent resolution as to whether it needs to watch what it links to or otherwise (think filesharing sites like The Pirate Bay and Rapidshare). The retreat by Blue Destiny must feel like a bitter-sweet victory in many ways. One result is that the whole question now hangs in the air unresolved, and Google don’t want that… the Search Engine giant is now moving back into the courts to ask for a judgment on its infringing of copyrights in this way. Now the aggressor, Google must think that it is in with a decent chance of success.

Big content industries, many of whom claim to be directly affected by filesharing, will now be very afraid of a Google success in this matter, and they will be watching the saga very closely indeed. A decision in Google’s favor will be very costly for them indeed.

Media startlet and fantastically wealthy singer Taylor Swift has donated half a million of her hard earned dollars to the victims of the Nashville floods.

Nashville – the home of country music – has been badly effected by floods which have seen many people lose their homes, and many musicians lose expensive equipment, practice rooms, and has caused the cancellation of many concerts. The flooding of Nashville might not seem much different when compared with so many other natural disasters across the world, but it is Nashville’s iconic status within music circles that makes this particularly moving to many in the industry. Perhaps it is the fact that this place is so near to musician’s hearts that has helped them to give so generously.

Swift has shot to fame of late and, despite her tender age of 20, has been ranked the US’s 69th most powerful celebrity. Her albums in 2008 sold a combined four million copies. Wow.

Whilst half a million might be a relative pittance to someone of Swift’s means, it is a moving gesture that will surely help get relief efforts under way. Hopefully it will also start an avalanche of other wealthy stars providing the area with much needed monetary assistance.

The popular white rapper Marshall Mathers, better known to his fans as Eminem, has gained headlines again by accusing the giant technology company “Apple rotten to the core”. This latest one involves accusations from Eminem that the giant company Apple who operates Apple Itunes, perhaps one of the most popular and well known music downloading websites, has allowed users to illegally download his music. He claims that Apple were breaching copyright laws and the contractual agreements that were in place did not allow for Apple to sell his songs. This could potentially be a multi-million dollar case.
